2011 – A year of successful projects and partnerships for RATB

Issue 6 2011  •  3 January 2012  •  Mr. Adrian Criţ, General Manager, RATB

2011 was full of achievements for Regia Autonomă de Transport Bucureşti (RATB), the most important surface public transport operator in Bucharest. During the first half of this year, we concluded two strategic partnerships, followed by several projects, with real benefits both for the public and our company.

RATB’s strategy regarding our manufacture and repair plant was to increase the effectiveness of its activity and modernise the production lines. In accordance with these objectives, we concluded a partnership with Astra Vagoane Arad (a well-known Romanian tram car manufacturer). The main aim of this partnership was the manufacture of a new low-floor tram called Imperio.

RATB brought in the production space, utilities and labour, while Astra Vagoane Arad, which has all the necessary technical papers and is a holder of a Siemens tram car manufacturing license, made investments in rearranging the working spaces and improving the production lines within RATB’s plant. Thus, our plant has become a centre for high performance tram manufacturing and our current activities are being carried out at European standards.

RATB’s projects for sustainable development

Issue 6 2010  •  15 December 2010  •  Adrian Criţ, General Manager, RATB

We all know that providing mobility in a capital city implies high energy consumption, which has negative effects on the quality of the environment. Therefore, the current European transport strategies promote alternatives to private cars, such as public transport vehicles, walking and cycling.

In this respect, RATB has focused on increasing the attractiveness of public transport services trying to maintain a fare offer that includes facilities for different social categories. At the same time, our company continued the process of renewing its vehicle fleet. Thus, we purchased and manufactured vehicles equipped with mobility-impaired access facilities, on-board audio/video passenger information systems, etc. and we adapted the infrastructure to ensure ease of access for public transport users.

RATB is the main surface public transport operator in Romania. From the point of view of density, our public transport network is the fourth largest in Europe with 164 routes (118 bus lines, 26 tramway lines and 20 trolleybus lines), with an overall length of 1,929km double-way. The routes are uniformly distributed, providing convenient transport links and the number of daily trips is approximately 2.3 million.
