Thales awarded signalling contracts for Singapore North-South, East-West lines and Tuas West Extension

For an amount of €142 million, Thales will enhance efficiency of 100 km of Singapore’s metro lines.

Thales has been selected by Singapore’s largest rail operator SMRT Corporation Ltd to supply its world-leading SelTrac Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) re-signalling solution for the North-South and East-West lines, for an amount of €118 million. The two lines combined are more than 100 km long and serve 54 stations. The Land Transport Authority of Singapore (LTA) has also awarded a €24 million contract for the signalling of the Tuas West Extension comprising 4 stations for the future East-West line extension. The entire new signaling system is expected to be operational by 2018.

Mr Khoo Hean Siang, SMRT Executive Vice President for Trains, said: “This is a massive project on a working line and will involve very close coordination between SMRT, Thales and the authorities. All necessary care will be taken to ensure the work is carried out safely and with minimum inconvenience to commuters.” Works will be carried out during non-passenger service hours.”

The re-signalling contract is part of SMRT and LTA’s plan to improve the public transport system, as growing population and new developments along rail axes have led to the increase of passengers traffic in the Singapore metro network. The addition of new trains and the enhancement of the signalling system will ease the congestion along the two lines especially during peak periods. SelTrac CBTC, incorporating moving-block technology, ensures safe train operation with minimal train separation thereby maximizing passenger service frequency and system capacity. Thales’s advanced solution will also lower the life-cycle costs for the operator. Since 1985, Thales’ CBTC system has been proven on 55 projects in 31 cities around the world and operates on over 1,200km of track, carrying an estimated 3 billion passengers annually.
