Consortium partners Vossloh Kiepe (Düsseldorf) and Vossloh Rail Vehicles (Valencia) have been awarded the tender announced by the transit operators Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe (VBK) and Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG), the public transport company of the city of Karlsruhe, to supply 25 modern vehicles with an option for 50 additional vehicles.

Karlsruhe NeueNiederflurbahThe new light rail vehicles from Vossloh Rail Vehicles, called “Citylink NET 2012” will be equipped with the modern traction systems of Vossloh Kiepe. The vehicles are specially adapted to the infrastructural conditions and characteristics of the City of Karlsruhe and surrounding region, fulfilling all actual requirements in mobility.

The light rail vehicles are 37.20 metres long and 2.65 metres wide, resulting in a total passenger capacity of 224 persons. The maximum operational speed of the three-part vehicles is 80 km/h. The bogies are equipped with pneumatic secondary suspension which provides superior dynamic characteristics as well as comfortable and smooth ride.

Vossloh Kiepe is responsible for project planning, delivery and commissioning of the electrical equipment. This includes the complete traction technology and vehicle control systems, on-board power system, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, train control systems as well as the passenger information system and video monitoring.

Delivery of these modern light rail vehicles is scheduled to begin in October 2013.

Similar urban passenger transport concepts are being succesfully realised in joint efforts by Vossloh Kiepe and Vossloh Rail Vehicles for the Spanish Island of Majorca as well as for the Spanish provinces León and Gijón.
