London Underground breaks passenger record carrying 5m in one day

Transport for London (TfL) figures reveal London Underground carried almost 5 million passengers on 9 October 2015, the busiest day in its 152-year history.

On 09 October 2015, London Underground recorded its busiest day on record with 4.735 million passengers travelling on the rail service. The day surpassed the previous record held on Friday 28 November 2014 when 4.734 million passengers travelled on the Tube. TfL also revealed the number of London Underground passenger journey’s has increased by a third since 2001, with the rate of growth increasing in the last five years.

Figures also reveal the last week of October was also the busiest week in the Tube’s history recording 28.614 million customer journeys. The previous busiest week was in December 2014, which saw 28.345 million journeys. TfL expects both the daily and weekly records to be broken again before the end of 2015.

Nick Brown, London Underground’s Managing Director, said: “The Tube is carrying more customers than ever before as London’s economy and population continue to grow.  This is why we are continuing to invest all of our income to modernise the service, improving reliability, train capacity and frequency and upgrading major stations to reduce congestion.”

With the capital’s population expected to reach 10 million by 2030, TfL is continuing to carry out an overhaul of the Tube network with the modernisation of major stations, trains, track and signalling taking place.
