The first trainset to be built by CAF for operation on Metro de Santiago has been inspected by Minister of Transport & Telecommunications Chile, Andrés Gómes-Lobo and Metro de Santiago President, Rodrigo Azócar at CAF’s manufacturing plant in Beasain, Bilbao.

Accompanied by CAF Chief Executive Officer, Andres Arizkorreta, the party viewed the first completed metro trainset designed for driverless operation on the new lines 3 and 6 of Santiago’s underground railway network.

Metro trainset project includes the supply of 185 cars and a 20 year maintenance contract

The project, awarded in late 2013, includes the supply of 185 cars and a maintenance contract lasting 20 years.

CAF has in recent years had a significant presence in Latin America, with projects in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina and Chile. The manufacturer won two additional projects in 2007 and 2011 for the supply of trainsets for Santiago’s metro and the associated maintenance, making the current volume of contracts in the country exceed €500 million.
