Bombardier Transportation has received an order from Norwegian financial services group DnB NOR (DnB NOR) for the delivery of six BOMBARDIER FLEXITY Classic trams intended for service on the Spårväg City line in Stockholm. The trams will be leased by Stockholm County Transit Authority (SL). The order is valued at approximately 21 million euro ($27 million US).

The new trams are to be used on the inner city tram line called Spårväg City. This historical tramline will resume commercial service after several years of heritage tram traffic. With deliveries of the new FLEXITY Classic trams scheduled for March to July 2011, Bombardier has also been able to facilitate the immediate lease of six trams in order to enable commercial operation to start as soon as August 23, 2010. This deal is the result of Bombardier and SL’s close cooperation with the public transit authorities Norrköpings Spårvägar (NSAB) and Stadtwerke Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main (VGF) together with DnB NOR’s financial services. In order to bridge the period until the new trams are delivered, Bombardier and DnB NOR have reached agreements with NSAB and VGF for the rented use of three used trams from each operator.

Göran Gunnarsson, President SL commented: “City tram lines are a future-proof concept. More and more cities in Europe and the rest of the world are implementing modern and environmentally friendly tram lines. I am convinced that the tram line will play an important role also in Stockholm and I am very happy to take the first step into the future by inaugurating the first part of Spårväg City”.

Klas Wåhlberg, President Bombardier Transportation Sweden stated: “Having grown and developed alongside SL for over a century, I am pleased that we were able to realize this unconventional tram lease solution enabling SL to commence operation of the renewed Spårväg City line nearly one year ahead of scheduled delivery of the new trams. I am grateful to the traffic operators of Norrköpings and Frankfurt and to our financial partner DnB NOR for making this unique arrangement possible. We are proud to be able to deliver six more vehicles to Stockholm, as this order confirms that SL is satisifed with the quality and service provided by Bombardier and underscores our capability as a provider of light rail solutions. These 70 per cent low floor vehicles are well-proven in service in Norrköping and Frankfurt as well as with numerous other urban transport customers around the world. We look forward to the opportunity to extend our activity in supporting Stockholm’s further ambitions for expansion and modernisation of the city’s transport network.”

More than 1,500 FLEXITY vehicles from Bombardier are already in successful revenue service. Overall, Bombardier now has more than 2,800 trams and light rail vehicles operating or on order in cities across Europe, Australia and North America. As is the case in Stockholm, many of our light rail vehicles operate in a transit system. Bombardier has delivered 60 transit systems in 16 countries around the globe; 32 of which are operating in urban applications and 22 in world leading airports. Bombardier has more than 35 years of experience in providing comprehensive operation and maintenance services for transit systems.
