Wiener Linien places order for 119 Bombardier FLEXITY trams

Vienna Transport Authority Wiener Linien has signed a contract with Bombardier for the supply of 119 FLEXITY trams and the maintenance of up to 156 vehicles.

The contract valued at approximately €431 million includes the manufacture of 119 FLEXITY trams and a 24-year FlexCare maintenance management system agreement. The contract also includes the option for an additional 37 trams and further maintenance support totalling 156 trams for Vienna. The vehicles will be manufactured at Bombardier’s Vienna site.

Gunter Steinbauer, CEO of Wiener Linien, said: “We wanted a vehicle that is modern, comfortable and environmentally-friendly, that fits the existing infrastructure and offers good value for money.”

At 34 metres long, the FLEXITY Vienna trams can accommodate up to 211 passengers and feature wide passage ways, spacious multipurpose areas and low entrances. Bombardier will be incorporating its FLEXX Urban bogies which according to the manufacturer provide a smoother ride.

The contract also incorporates a FlexCare system that allows customers to perform maintenance at their own depots under the overall maintenance management responsibility of Bombardier.
