The first two new 114 series metro trains have now entered service on Line L7 of the Barcelona Metro network, supplied by an Alstom-CAF consortium. The remaining three-car trains of the contract will enter service over the coming weeks following a trial-operation period.

The new metro trains incorporate the latest technological advances and improve comfort for users

President of operator Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) Henry Ticó attended the launch ceremony in December 2014 alongside the current Minister of Planning and Sustainability of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Santi Vila.

Capable of a maximum speed of 90km/h, these five trains, added to the 19 trains of series 113 which already offer a commercial service in Metro del Vallès will allow for the renewal and modernisation of the fleet of the Barcelona-Vallès line and the gradual replacement of the series 111 trains which have been in use since 1983.

The new metro trains incorporate the latest technological advances and improve comfort for users, including:

Length and capacity

60m-long trains, comprising three aluminium-built carriages. The maximum capacity of the trains is 605 passengers, between seated and standing, increasing the capacity of the series 111 units by 30 passengers.

Interior

The interior is light and continuous with spacious connection between carriages. The furnishing and decoration are of the highest safety and comfort.

Ergonomics

The driver’s cabin is as spacious and comfortable for the driver as the 4-carriage units.

Climate control

Interior climate control, together with optimal acoustic insulation, will offer an atmosphere of high quality and comfort for users.

Seats

The interior distribution is suitable to the needs of an urban line, with a similar seat distribution to long trains, with seats arranged in opposite-facing groups of four and others arranged laterally.

Accessibility

These trains will be completely accessible by everyone, like the rest of FGC’s current fleet, with a total of nine double-doors distributed along the train on both sides.

Performance

The speed and acceleration of the new trains will be the same as the present units, in accordance with the conditioning factors of the line layout, with electronically controlled alternating current engines that allow high energy recover rates while the train is braking. They have ATP protection system and will operate on Line L7 with ATO assisted operation.

Safety and information

They have advanced information, signalling and communication systems. In this regard, they have a CCTV vigilance system that records images in a black box and with real-time transmission to the Integrated Control Centre. They are fitted with radio-telephone, GSM and UMTS telephone, location, passenger information systems with flat screen, loudspeaker and interphone, among other features.
