CDGVAL, Paris – Charles de Gaulle airport’s new fully-automatic on-site metro transit system, was inaugurated on 3 April 2007. With a top speed of 70km/h, it links terminal CDG 1 with terminal CDG 2 (at the SNCF railway station) in only eight minutes via car park PR, terminal 3/Roissypole and car park PX.

Running 24 hours a day, the CDGVAL guarantees transit passengers and the 85,000 airport employees a simple, safe and comfortable ride. Until recently, the terminals, rail and bus stations, and outlying car parks at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport have been connected by bus services. The airport’s expansion and traffic growth made it necessary to provide a simpler, faster and more regular link.

The turnkey delivery of this automatic transit system was provided by Siemens Transportation Systems. The company supplied and installed seven Val 208 two-car train sets (each train capable of carrying 120 persons and their baggage), the Operation Control Centre, the automatic control systems, the trackside equipment, the high-current systems, the low-current systems, the platform screens of the five stations and the workshop equipment.

According to Siemens, the VAL is a safe, fast and reliable fully automatic metro transit system that runs on tyres. The system is already operating at Paris-Orly and Chicago O’Hare airports. The cities of Lille, Toulouse, Rennes, Turin, Taipei and Uijeongbu (Seoul) have also selected the Val system.

Siemens claims that full automation enables high traffic flexibility and reduces passenger waiting times in stations by increasing train frequency (every 4 minutes at peak times), under optimum safety conditions.

Aéroports de Paris has awarded a seven-year contract to operate the CDGVAL to Aérosat, a joint subsidiary of the operator Keolis and Siemens Transportation Systems.

Siemens Transportation Systems and its subsidiary VTS have also been awarded maintenance contracts up to 2012, covering the entire system (Operation Control Centre, automatic control systems, rolling stock, power, platform screen doors and track).

Didier Roussel, President of Siemens Transportation Systems, commented: “With Siemens’ CDGVAL, Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport passengers and personnel now benefit from one of the most modern transport systems in the world. It offers its passengers a comfortable and easy solution for transit in complete safety.”
