Siemens has been awarded a contract by CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd. (CSR ZELC) to supply propulsion systems and bogies for seven low-floor trams to operate in the Haizhu district of Guangzhou, China. The end user is Guangzhou Tram Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Guangzhou Metro Corporation. It is Siemens’ first low-floor tram project in the Chinese tram market.

According to the contract, Siemens will supply propulsion and vehicle control systems, braking systems, auxiliary systems and bogies (with drive unit) for seven low-floor trams. The first section of the Haizhu Circle line starts at Wanshengwei station and ends at Guangzhou Tower. Trams will run at a maximum speed of 70 kilometers per hour and the total length of the line is 7.7 kilometers, with ten stations. It is scheduled to start operation by late 2014 and is likely to be expanded in the following years.

The basis for the order is a technical licensing agreement and a long-term cooperation agreement on low-floor trams signed by Siemens and ZELC.

In 1881, Siemens produced the world’s first electric tram and, in 1899, Siemens supplied China’s first tram in Beijing.
