Bournemouth Transport Ltd (BTL), part of RATP Group, is updating its trademark fleet of ‘Yellow Buses’ with an order of eight 11.5 metre StreetLite Max vehicles from Wrightbus.

The new vehicles are the latest additions to BTL’s current fleet of 136 vehicles which service twelve core routes across the regional area, including neighbouring Poole and Christchurch, and a supporting network of lower-frequency routes.

In line with requirements from BTL for vehicles that provide an optimal service to its 14 million plus passengers carried annually, whilst maintaining the best possible level of fuel efficiency, the StreetLite Max has the capacity to carry a maximum of 70 passengers – that of a big bus – whilst running with the flexibility and fuel consumption of a smaller vehicle. It also has a better turning circle than heavy-duty single deck competitors.

Powered by the tried and tested 4 cylinder Cummins 207PS iSBe Euro 5 compliant engine, the StreetLite Max has a highly responsive, flexible and fuel efficient power unit, well matched to the Voith D824.5E 4 speed fully automated gearbox with integral hydrodynamic retarder.

Commenting on the order, Engineering Director at Bournemouth Transport Ltd, Gary Corrie, said: “Increased efficiency is ever more important in the competitive market place we operate within Bournemouth and the surrounding areas. Servicing such a large number of passengers everyday means our vehicles need to offer a high quality standard as well as be able to manoeuvre quickly and easily with high passenger loadings, whilst minimising environmental impact. Importantly, we also need to be able to keep fuel and other operating costs as low as possible.”

He continued: “The StreetLite Max offers an ideal solution to our needs, and based on performance we have experienced from previous Wrightbus vehicles, I am confident that as well as significant operational fuel savings, these new additions will also be welcomed by passengers and drivers alike.”

Wrightbus National Accounts Manager, Steve Jackson, added: “The StreeLite Max is a logical choice for BTL, offering running costs typically associated with that of a standard mid-sized bus, but with the capacity and performance of a traditional full sized bus.”

The new vehicles are due for delivery in June.
