Arriva Manchester celebrated the arrival of its first fleet of hybrid technology buses as they rolled into the area this week. A special launch event took place outside Manchester town hall to welcome the eco-friendly, low carbon emission buses to the city, which hit the road on 2nd March.

The £3.3million investment follows a successful bid to the government’s Green Bus Fund resulting in the delivery of 11 new Volvo hybrid buses, which will be used on the busy city service 10, which runs between Manchester and Salford.

John Rimmer, area managing director, Arriva Manchester, said: “Arriva North West is committed to delivering state of the art buses for our customers, which not only make bus travel more attractive with additions such as free WiFi and leather seating, but which also make a real difference to local air quality.

“Cleaner fuelled vehicles are the future of sustainable transport and we are delighted to be introducing the hybrid buses to our fleet.”

The hybrid buses bid was supported Transport for Greater Manchester and is consistent with the aims of the Greater Manchester Local Transport Plan to utilise emerging low-emissions technology.

Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, said: “It’s great to see Arriva taking the initiative to invest in new, greener buses. As well as being better for the environment, we know passengers like to use them. I hope these state-of-the-art green buses will encourage more people to give their local Arriva service a go.

“Greater Manchester now has more new hybrid diesel-electric buses than anywhere outside London – by summer this year there will be 230. Our lead in this area is really something to be proud of and I’m glad to see Arriva playing their part.”

Arriva North West is taking delivery of 44 Volvo B5LH double decker buses with Wrightbus bodywork, as part of the largest order of its type outside of London. The buses are part of a group wide campaign by Arriva to introduce more than £26.7m of new low carbon emission buses to its UK fleet. Arriva is funding £22.2m of the investment with the remainder provided by the Green Bus Fund.

The Green Bus Fund aims to help bus companies and local authorities in England to increase the number of new low carbon, eco-friendly buses on England’s roads.
