The first train for the new Munich metro has rolled out of the production plant in Vienna, Austria, an event witnessed by Herbert König, CEO of the Munich transport corporation (MVG). The train will now be taken to the test and validation center in Wegberg-Wildenrath, Germany, where it will undergo an extensive test program. Delivery of the first trains to MVG is expected to take place in the course of this year.

Yesterday Siemens delivered its 100th metro train to Oslo, the capital of Norway, ten years after the signing of first contract for what has meanwhile become the biggest metro order in the history of the company. At the handing-over ceremony Sandra Gott-Karlbauer, CEO of the Urban Transport Business Unit, said: “When the last units are delivered next spring, the entire metro fleet will then comprise 115 model MX300 three-car trains. This fact alone is well worth mentioning – because it gives Oslo the world’s biggest uniform Siemens metro fleet! It’s a true success story we can be proud of!”

The design of Munich’s new C2 type underground train has won two awards: the Universal Design Award 2013 from a panel of experts, and the Universal Design Consumer Favorite 2013 award from a panel of consumers. The design is the work of internationally-renowned Munich vehicle designer Alexander Neumeister, the founder of N+P Industrial Design. As with the previous version it was developed in close conjunction with Munich Public Transportation Company (MVG), a subsidiary of Munich City Utilities (SWM). The trains will be built by Siemens Rail Systems in Vienna and Munich.

The fully automatic Val type underground in Turin, Italy is to be extended by 1.6 kilometers. Infra.To, the company that owns the Turin Underground infrastructure, has just placed a corresponding order with Siemens Rail Systems. The line extension is to be opened for revenue service by the end of 2015. Turin’s first underground line will then serve 23 instead of 21 stations. Metro services will not be disrupted by this construction work.

The new metro train for the capital of Poland – the Inspiro from Siemens – was presented to the public in the middle of January. This was the first opportunity for the people of Warsaw to see and board the new metro, which is due to enter revenue service later this year. The unveiling ceremony of the Siemens train was performed by Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, Mayoress of Warsaw, Jerzy Lejk, CEO of the Warsaw Metro and Peter Baudrexl, CEO of Siemens Poland. In the first three hours following the ceremony, some three thousand people took a look at their future means of rapid transit.

57 kilometers in length, Line 10 of the Beijing Subway welcomed its first passengers at the end of December. Siemens fitted both the line and the on-board equipment for 84 trains with the Trainguard MT train protection system. The Line 10 is now the world’s longest metro line equipped with CBTC (Communication Based Train Control). “We’d already shown what our automation technology could do during the expansion of the metro lines in Guangzhou, Suzhou and Nanjing. We’re proud to be a reliable infrastructural partner, making a major contribution to improving Beijing’s traffic situation,” said Jürgen Brandes, Head of Siemens’ Rail Automation Business Unit.

Siemens will supply the signaling and control equipment for the 21 kilometer long Crossrail tunnel in London, linking up the local transport system to the suburban regional services of Network Rail. The project company “Crossrail” has placed an order with the consortium made up of Siemens and Invensys. The business is worth a total of around 60 million euros. Commissioning of the overall line is scheduled for the end of 2018.

The first electric bus (eBus) for the Austrian capital city of Vienna, supplied by Siemens and Rampini, has been brought into service by “Wiener Linien”, the municipal public transit company. This vehicle is the first of twelve with which the Vienna public transportation company intends to switch two of the city’s bus services completely to electric power by the summer of 2013. At the terminal stops at each end of the line, the electric bus draws in the power it requires through a roof-mounted pantograph, and stores it in its batteries within 15 minutes. The bus also recovers its braking energy, and has a range of between 120 and 150 kilometers.

In a ceremony in its Vienna plant, the Siemens Rail Systems Division has presented to the Munich City Utilities (SWM) the first painted carbody of the new metro trains ordered for the Munich transit company MVG. It is the end section of the first of 21 C2 type six-car permanently coupled trains, which the SWM/MVG ordered from Siemens at the end of 2010. This was the largest order for rolling stock in the history of the Munich Underground. The investment totals about 185 million euros. At the same time, SWM/MVG took out two options on a further 23 metro trains, for a total of 276 cars, which can be transformed into firm orders until 2016 and 2020, respectively. This would increase the total investment to around 550 million euros. The new trains are being built in the Siemens plants in Vienna, Austria, and in Munich-Allach, Germany. From the seventh train onward, final assembly will take place in Munich.

As part of its capacity expansion program, the Munich Public Transportation Company (MVG) will be the first German transit operator to be supplied with the new Avenio tram from Siemens. The Munich City Utilities (SWM) has today ordered a total of eight vehicles which are to be operated by its subsidiary MVG. Six trams, which are to be built at the Siemens plant in Vienna, are due to enter revenue service when the winter timetable goes into effect at the end of 2013. “For us, this is an immensely important order from a leading German customer. After all, the MVG is one of Germany’s largest mass transit operators. And, as this is the first order to be placed for our new Avenio tram within Germany, it’s something very special,” said Jochen Eickholt, who will take charge of the Siemens Rail Systems Division as from October 1.

Siemens AG and Stadler Pankow GmbH have joined forces to form a consortium for the Berlin S-Bahn (suburban railway) tender. Its aim is to put forward a joint bid to the potential operator of the section open to tender (the ‘Ring’ line) for the supply, maintenance and servicing of new S-Bahn trains. The two companies can call upon many years of experience in the commuter train business. The consortium pulls together the economic clout and know-how of a large corporation and the flexibility and expertise of a medium-sized company. The two parties have cooperated reliably and successfully in the past, and the partnership between Siemens and Stadler has proven itself effective, particularly in S-Bahn projects such as the recent commuter trains supplied to the Swiss Federal Railways.

Siemens Rail Systems has received an order from the Qatar Foundation for the turnkey construction of a tram system in the capital Doha aimed at transforming Qatar into a knowledge-based society. The order is worth more than 100 million euros. The scope of supply also includes signaling and communication systems, electrification as well as the depot equipment. Siemens will also be equipping four of the stations with platform edge doors. Nineteen Avenio trams will run on 11.5 kilometers of track without any overhead contact lines. The system will be installed on the university campus and serve 25 stations. The trams will be equipped with the Sitras HES energy storage system from Siemens, with energy being supplied at the tram stops. The tram system will enter service in autumn 2015.

Aéroports de Paris has inaugurated service on an extension of the CDGVAL LISA line. The Liaison Interne Satellite Aérogare (LISA) line is the fully automated metro line at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport. This line, which already connects Terminal 2E to boarding gate satellite S3, has been extended, with no interruption or disruption to operations, through to the new S4.

Siemens has been awarded an order to supply signaling systems for the nearly 16-km-long extension of metro Lines 2 and 3 in the Greek capital by operator Attiko Metro S.A. The scope of supply includes the electronic interlockings and outdoor equipment, as well as the trackside components for automatic train control system. Furthermore, 17 trains will be fitted with Siemens onboard units. The order is worth a total of around 41 million euros and calls for first phase to be commissioned in autumn 2013.
