The Rostocker Straßenbahn AG (RSAG) have placed an order with Vossloh Kiepe (Düsseldorf) and Vossloh Rail Vehicles (Valencia) for 13 new trams.

The new 100% low-floor vehicles will gradually replace the Tatra railcars which have been in use in Rostock for quite some time. Delivery of the first new tramcars is scheduled to begin in 2013 and to be finished by the beginning of 2014.

The new 5-part multihinge traction vehicles will be 32 metres long and 2.65 metre wide. As a special feature, the railcar width reduces to 2.30 metres at the entrance level. This is advantageous in that the available platforms can continue to be used without any structural alterations. The trams are, however, not only for the above-ground operation but are also underground usage. In addition the TramLinks will be equipped with systems for passenger information, heating, air conditioning and ventilation – both in the driver’s cab as well as the passenger compartments.

The tram’s most striking feature is the extremely low energy consumption. This is the result of reusing the breaking energy: high-performance condensers – so called Supercaps –are mounted on top of the vehicle’s roof and save the energy which is created when the breaks are applied. This energy is then reused for acceleration, heating or air-conditioning. This reduces the amount of energy needed from the overhead line.
