New state-of-the-art CCTV for Ashton bus station

Over a dozen new high-quality CCTV cameras have been installed at Ashton-under-Lyne bus station.

Transport for Greater Manchester has invested £15,000 in the new technology which will offer high quality recordable and transferable digital footage.

The sixteen cameras will continue to monitor the bus station 24/7 and have been placed at locations throughout the facility.

They have replaced an older CCTV model, present since 1994, at a station which sees more than 1,000 bus departures a day.

Michael Renshaw, Bus and Rail Director for Transport for Greater Manchester, said: “We are committed to making passengers feel safe and secure and these new advanced cameras are a real demonstration of that.

“Our excellent relationship with the police is also vital in ensuring Ashton bus station continues as a no-go area for crime and anti-social behaviour.

“These new cameras mean we and our partners are now in an even stronger position to tackle any problems swiftly and decisively.”

Superintendent Nicola Spragg, from the Tameside Division of Greater Manchester Police, added: “We have worked alongside Transport for Greater Manchester to improve the CCTV system at Ashton bus station.

“The updated system will be a key asset in our commitment to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in this busy transport hub.

“We also have a police information pod at the station which will provide reassurance to the community as Ashton bus station becomes busier with shoppers in the run-up to the festive period.”
