Go-Ahead company Metrobus won Bus Operator of the Year at the prestigious National Transport Awards yesterday.

The awards, which bring together operators and local authorities from across the UK, also saw rail operator Southern win the award for Contribution to Sustainable Transport.

Alan Eatwell, Managing Director of Metrobus said: “I am absolutely delighted that the Metrobus team’s efforts have been recognised in this way. In giving us the award, the judges recognised the importance of being responsive and flexible to local needs – an approach which has helped us grow patronage by 105% on the Crawley bus network in the past ten years for example.”

Southern received the sustainable transport award for its imaginative initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint, including installing regenerative braking on its 377 train fleet, saving 17% of traction power. Station travel plans are encouraging passengers to bus, cycle and walk to station. Go-Ahead has a target to reduce its emissions by 20% per passenger journey by 2015 and has achieved 14% to date.

Southern’s Balham Station was highly commended in the Rail Station of the Year category.
