The sustainability performance of FirstGroup, the leading transport operator in the UK and North America, has been named best in the UK and second best in the world.

EIRIS, the leading global provider of independent research into the environmental, social, governance and ethical performance of companies, produced a report assessing the sustainability performance of all 2,063 companies in the FTSE All-World Developed Index. FirstGroup came second in the EIRIS top 10 ‘Sustainability Leaders’ list.

According to the report, Aberdeen based FirstGroup: “Scores well on environmental, social and governance issues across the board and has demonstrated significant improvements in its environmental performance.”

Terri Vogt, FirstGroup’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) said: “I’m delighted that FirstGroup has scored so well in the EIRIS Sustainability Report, which is highly respected and authoritative. To be rated as the best performing company in terms of sustainability in the UK, and the second best globally, is quite an achievement.

“The ranking recognises the efforts we have invested in recent years to reduce our carbon footprint ensuring that the public transport services we provide remain a low emissions alternative to private transport.

“In addition our rating also reflects the critical role public transport has in combating climate change. Our buses and trains are very much part of the solution to a more sustainable world and given we move some 2.5 billion passengers a year, the scale of our operations has contributed to FirstGroup’s ‘Sustainability Leader’ status.”
