The city of Portland, Oregon, was recently named the best city for public transportation in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. GIRO congratulates its client TriMet, the authority that operates public transit services in Portland, on helping the city achieve the top ranking.

The list of the 10 Best Cities for Public Transportation identifies the cities across America that offer the best combination of transportation investment, ridership, and safety.

TriMet provides bus, light rail, and commuter rail service in the Portland metro area and has the eighth highest ridership in the United States – an impressive achievement given that Portland is ranked 23rd in population. TriMet has been a GIRO client since 2001 and is currently using the 2010 version of the HASTUS™ software solution.

“TriMet is known in the industry as one of the most innovative transit authorities, so it is befitting that that they would use the most powerful and flexible software on the market,” said GIRO’s Vice-President of Business Development, Pierre Trudeau. “Likewise, HASTUS is renowned for its innovative approach to optimization, cost-saving capabilities, and flexibility. It’s the ideal solution to support TriMet’s ongoing evolution, which includes the Transit Investment Plan (TIP) for improved transportation and liveability,” added Mr. Trudeau.

GIRO congratulates its clients in the following five cities that also made the top 10 list: Boston (MBTA), Honolulu (TheBus), Los Angeles (LACMTA), Minneapolis-St.Paul (Metro Transit), and New York (MTA).
