Mott MacDonald has been appointed as Urban Traffic Management and Control (UTMC) systems supplier by Middlesbrough Council for the Tees Valley region, UK.
The UTMC project is being implemented to provide improved network management and better information to the public regarding both the road and public transport networks across the authorities of Middlesbrough, Darlington, Redcar & Cleveland, Stockton and Hartlepool.
Mott MacDonald will provide a UTMC common database based on the consultancy’s own Common Data Management Facility (CDMF). The CDMF will collect data from systems including traffic counters, bus Real-time Passenger Information (RTPI), Urban Traffic Control (UTC) and the Highways Agency National Traffic Control Centre (NTCC). The CDMF will then provide an integrated view of traffic and travel information on a single user display.
Mott MacDonald’s established CDMF has been developed over the past decade and is already successfully in use in 10 regions across the UK.
Project director Fraser Macdonald said, “As Mott MacDonald has been previously involved in the provision of UTMC systems to neighbouring authorities, the Tees Valley authorities will be able to share network management information with those neighbouring authorities at a low cost. Our approach to knowledge sharing and transfer provides Tees Valley with the opportunity to collaborate on joint development initiatives with other CDMF clients, such as Tyne & Wear, often resulting in shared costs and added value upgrade benefits.”
Mott MacDonald’s commission is due to finish mid 2011 with ongoing support provided following the projects systems implementation.
