China Steel Co. has awarded a rolling stock contract to Alstom to supply trams for the Kaohsiung tramway project, a first for the manufacturer in Taiwan.

Phase two is an extension of the existing Kaohsiung tramway line. The project will add 13.4km and 23 stations to the line. This will increase the tramway length to 22.1km providing access to 37 stations.  Phase two of the project is due to begin revenue service in 2019. The new line will loop the city and connect with two existing Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) lines: the Red and Orange.

Alstom will deliver its Citadis X05 trams equipped with permanent magnet motors to reduce energy consumption. Furthermore, the manufacturer will fit the trams with an on-board energy storage solution located on the roof which enables the tram to run without catenary from one station to another. The technology allows the tram to be fully charged via pantographs for 20 seconds when stopped at stations.

Commenting on the award win, Ling Fang, Alstom Managing Director of China & East Asia, said: “Alstom is proud to bring its leading tramway and infrastructure technologies to Taiwan. Once completed, the tramway line will provide a green transport solution to Kaohsiung residents and visitors who will be able to commute aboard a tram that is efficient, comfortable, and that blends perfectly into the cityscape.”

The 15 Citadis X05 trams will be designed and manufactured by Alstom La Rochelle site in France.
