First 100 metres of Florence tramway line 2 completed

The Tram di Firenze S.p.A. consortium celebrated completion of the first 100 metres of Florence tramway line 2.

The first 100 metres of Florence tramway line 2 were revealed at a ceremony in Novoli, Florence. The occasion was attended by Mayor of the city, Dario Nardella and consortium partners including Alstom who will be responsible for installation of tracks, contact lines and the substations as well as lighting and electrical distribution.

The contract awarded to Tram di Firenze S.p.A. by the municipal council involves the turnkey construction of line 2 and the first stretch of line 3 of the city’s tramway system. The concession, which was granted under conditions of project financing, also includes the management of the entire system, including line 1 which was constructed under a separate contract. Alstom’s Guidonia site in Italy, which specialises in the production of railway infrastructure, is responsible for delivering the project.

Pierre-Louis Bertina, Managing Director for Alstom Transport in Italy, commented on the initial stage of Florence tramway line 2: “As this project milestone shows, Alstom is committed to contributing to Florence’s tramway system by executing the project on time while guaranteeing the highest standards of quality.”

Once completed, Florence’s tramway system will consist of three lines covering 19 kilometres. Line 1, which connects Scandicci to Santa Maria Novella station, has been operating since 2010. Line 2, which will connect Peretola airport to Santa Maria Novella station, and line 3, which will run from the station to Careggi via Fortezza da Basso, are still under construction and will be finished by 2017.
