Christmas has come early for bus customers in Consett, thanks to a £1.4million investment by local bus company Go North East.

A fleet of 12 brand new buses has been introduced onto the town’s ‘Venture’ bus routes, with each of the new buses having the latest low emission engines and next stop announcements to make journeys easier.

Go North East’s ‘Venture’ routes provide important links across Derwentside to Consett and Stanley, with most of the services running half-hourly throughout the day on Mondays to Saturdays.

North West Durham MP Pat Glass attended one of the recent launch events in Consett Bus Station and was impressed with the new buses.

Ms Glass said: “I have seen these buses on the road in Consett and I am really pleased at how good they look. I have received positive comments from constituents and having been on board one of the new Venture buses this morning. I am pleased the local fleet has been upgraded.”

Delves Lane Ward County Councillor, Bob Glass said: “Whilst I am doing the rounds in Delves Lane a number of people have told me they are pleased about the standard of the new venture buses.”

Also attending the launch was Colin McPherson, finance director at Go North East, the region’s largest bus company.

Mr McPherson said: “Consett is becoming increasingly vibrant and we’re very proud to be investing £1.4million in new buses for the area.  We know just how vital buses are to help create a successful economy by making journeys to work, shopping and leisure easier.”

The ‘Venture’ routes run between Consett and Delves Lane, Shotley Bridge, Medomsley, Castleside and Chopwell at frequent intervals throughout the day on Mondays to Saturdays. Fares start from only £3.30 to travel all day in the Consett area.  More information on bus times and prices can be found at www.simplygo.com or by calling 0845 6060260.
