In March of this year Vossloh Kiepe and IFTEC, Leipzig, were awarded a contract for the general inspection and modernisation of 39 metro twin power cars with an option for another 35 vehicles by the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG). The work on the first vehicles has begun now. Vossloh Kiepe is responsible for the electrical upgrade and the pneumatic equipment. As a subcontractor IFTEC performs the work on the mechanical parts. The work is to be finished in 2017.

The work on the first twin power car of the type F76E has already begun on the premises of IFTEC in Leipzig. All the equipment is removed from the metro twin power cars, the single components are done up, modernised and then fitted in the cars again.

Vossloh Kiepe also fits the traction components, e.g. the traction control device, the pulse device and a new static on-board converter, which is to supply the DC 110 V on-board power supply system. These components have already been developed by Vossloh Kiepe and delivered to the BVG within the scope of a contract for modernisation of these power cars awarded two years ago.

Vossloh Kiepe, Düsseldorf, and IFTEC have already cooperated for some years now within the scope of a service alliance. Carsten Kossow, Sales Manager of Vossloh Kiepe Düsseldorf, explains: “It is not the first order that Vossloh Kiepe Düsseldorf and IFTEC fulfil together in a consortium. Already in 2009 we received the order to refurbish and modernise 50 Munich low-floor tramcars of the type R2.2, which we expect to complete this year.”

Soon one metro twin power car will be transported to IFTEC in Leipzig every four weeks by a heavy goods road vehicle so that it can be modernised there and returned to the BVG after four months.
